In the 2000 WNBA basketball season, she was ranked in most categories. She was 5th in points per game.
While she came in at 3rd in rebounds per game, second in blocks per game, and 20th in her free throw
percentage. She came in 2nd in the 2000 MVP polls, losing to the not-so-deserving Sheryl Swoopes.
In my opinion, it is not the Sparks' year to win the Championship, but with the retirement of Cynthia
Cooper, we should be in good shape for the 2001 season.
Lisa is also a model. When she was attending Morningside High School, she scored 101 in
the first half. She is also the spokeswoman for the Sears Breast Cancer program. In the first WNBA
all-star game, she received the MVP award.
Quick Bio
Lisa Leslie was born on July 7th, 1972. She is undoubtably the most dominant 6'4" center
on the Los Angeles Sparks WNBA team. Lisa attended the University of Southern California, and
graduated in 1994. She was the first center signed in the WNBA league. Lisa was a part of the 1996
gold medal team of the olympics in Atlanta.
Well, my infatuation with Lisa Leslie began in the 1996 olympics. Lisa helped the 1996 Olympic
team win gold in Atlanta. Her court awareness, style of play, and basketball personality attracted me to
her. Ever since then, I have talked about her like we were old friends. Lisa also got me hooked
with her since of feminism on the court. A lot of women carry themselves different when they play
a sport, but one thing that she does is act like a lady on and off of the court. And I admire her for
that.
On June 26th, of the year 2000. I had a close encounter with The Great Lisa Leslie.
I was attending the Mystics vs. Sparks
game at the MCI Center in DC. I was of the only Sparks fans cheering in the Mystics home court.
A lot of the fans and I would scream back and forth to each other. People who know me know of
my loud voice and know how much I love Lisa. I was screaming at the top of my lungs for her. And
she could hear me. I know it, because whenever it was quiet, I was yelling for her, and she would
kind of scan the crowd looking for me. Well after we beat the Mystics, I stood in my seat yelling for
her. She kept looking in my direction, but never quite at me. Some of the Mystics fans kept asking
the security guards if I could go down there, b/c I was a hard core Lisa Leslie fan. But the guards
wouldn't let me down there because I didn't have a yellow pass or something. But then this woman
came up to me and asked me if I was really a fan of Lisa Leslie. I was like, "YEA! SHE'S THE GREATEST
PLAYER IN THE WNBA!" The woman laughed at my sincereness. And told me that she was staying
in the same hotel as her. I asked who the woman was. And she said, "Her sister!" I fell on my knees!
I was like, "No Way!" She assured me that she was her sister. And since I couldn't go to the hotel with
them, she asked for my address. I really didn't expect her to sign or give me anything. But low and behold,
the next day, I received a letter from her sister, along with an autograph for me, and three autographs for
my friends, also a polaroid picture of the goddess. Seen above!
